Seasons

Overview

We want to have the most transparent and competitive league, so our rules are there for all owners and prospective owners to view. They have changed over the years to coincide with rule changes from the National Football League. They are updated each year and outlined for all owners.

2005

Overview

We went into the inaugural season with many rookies to fantasy football. This was a hard sell for Justin Benline to fill the league. One team even went without an owner for the year and finished with a 1-13 record.

Justin Benline won the initial championship. This would start a long history of success for the founder of the league. The initial year was successful and was the start of a very successful franchise.

2006

Overview

Going into the 2nd year, we saw a flaw from the years past. With having two divisions, we saw some of the best teams fail to make the playoffs by a weak division. We decided that now the top six teams would make the post-season and we would only have one division.

2007

Overview

Eric Hersey teamed up with Justin Benline to help bring some validity to the league. From this point, payments were inconsistent and communication needed improvement. By having two commissioners, a checks and balance system was created.

This would also be an innovative year by allowing for an individual defensive players placed in your starting lineup. This would create some interesting scenarios and strategy for drafts and weekly scoring.

Dustin Holt would also become the first back-to-back champion and lay precedent for some of the more successful starting lineup tactics (QB and WR for the same team).

2008

Overview

The year prior we renamed the league as the RFFL but 2008 was when we finally got a logo and some character. This would be displayed on our league homepages and soon would evolve into what you see to this very day.

We also increased the rosters and starting positions. The year prior we introduced individual defensive players, but this year we had you start one from each group (defensive line, linebacker, and secondary). This would give the knowledgeable owner an upper edge during their weekly matchup.

The biggest change would be in the increase to another league. For the first time, we would allow another ten owners to participate in a separate league. This increase would forge the creation of a third league years later.

2009

Overview

The scoring and structure remained mostly untouched but one thing was for sure, those who won should get all money owed to them. The previous year there were some funds withheld after the season ended. From this moment on, we created caps on all free agent/trade moves. This would freeze accounts making too many transactions and not paying. This would fix problems in the upcoming years.

2010

Overview

With the increasing demand from friends and coworkers, we decided to open up another league and simultaneously host three ten team leagues. This would allow a better chance to win for some of the regulars, but also give a chance to some newcomers.

This would also be the first year that co-commissioner Eric Hersey would bring home a championship. Although he had been to championship finals a few times before, Hersey was never able to bring home a trophy.

2011

Overview

Geno Martello was introduced to fantasy football the year prior and seemed to catch on quickly. Only a year in and he found himself winning two of the leagues and coming home with a pretty large cash prize.

We also renovated our logo and branding in 2011. We continued to utilize our graphic knowledge to bring some of the best team and brand logos for fantasy football.

2012

Overview

John Wyatt Edgar had been running his own fantasy league with obscure scoring and deep benches. We allowed him to bring this creation to the RFFL and it was deemed the X-League. Although fun for many, the league had no entry fee and the competitive nature felt the results of having no cash reward. This idea would be transformed into a different concept the following year.

We also tried to become more current in 2012 by releasing rfflfootball.com for league stats and history. This website would allow for easier access to the associated sites and owner profiles.

2012 would also be the year that league owner Justin Benline would go to the finals in all three leagues. This is a feat that has never been done and although only winning one out of the three, it is a tremendous accomplishment.

2013

Overview

Very little changes took part with our standard leagues. We introduced a few new owners to the league, one being the very first female in Lauren Hersey. She proved that she was a rightful owner by claiming a championship in her very first year.

We also had some cleaning up to do. With an overall feel that the X-League failed to capture the fun and strategically standpoints of the RFFL, we chose to try something new. We created an elimination style weekly game (much like standard one-week formats that are very popular now). This allowed for new faces to join and start any lineup they want each week, eliminating the players from your pool each week. This concept would be scrapped the following year.

2014

Overview

The removal of the kicker position was something that was in the works for years. By adding the point value of the kicker to the Defense/Special Teams, now that position truly resembles the name given.

By eliminating two draft positions, we allowed for two flex players. This was the first time that you did not have to have a set amount of positional players drafted. This would allow flexibility in trades and an easier way to handcuff star positions.

We also did what was a long time coming; they created a keeper league. Ten trusted owners took part in a 28-round draft for the first year of the league. Detailed rules were given and no longer were you just playing for the current season.

2015

Overview

The RFFL successfully launched the first ever Keeper League in 2014. With the new system, owners finally had the chance to keep players and do more than just draft players. With the option to keep players, trade picks, and make long-term moves, 2015 will be a big year to see how the system works.

The format of the RFFL has served to be consistent and fair so very little needed changed for 2015. The new website was launched giving a better overview of rules and records. The RFFL continues to search for different ways to make the league more interactive and serve better data.

2016

Overview

As the NFL evolved over the years, so did the RFFL. After revamping the entire MFL site structure, the RFFL decided to change some of the roster parameters of years past. No longer were you required to have a set number of each position, rather you could really organize your team the way you wanted. With more roster depth, owners have more creativity with how they want to play. The RFFL always said that every play should matter, and in 2016 they made it that every yard should matter when they instituted a decimal system. The biggest change was doing away with first come, first served free agency. Now there would be a waiver system in place, allowing for bidding, so that all owners have equal shot at the hottest trend of the week.

2017

Overview

The RFFL bring new faces and a few needed rule changes in 2017. The Weezy is now officially under the RFFL banner, bringing in new owners and fresh blood to the MFL website package. Owner Justin Scott remains commissioner of this tenured league and has adapted some scoring to mirror the RFFL standards. The biggest change will be in the form of playoffs. The RFFL will join the ranks of many similar leagues and end the season Week 16. The RFFL will continue to evolve and 2017 is just another year in making this a better place to play fantasy football.

2018

Overview

2018 marked the very first year where the RFFL had three different leagues with three different formats. The start of the very first Dynasty league proved to be a success, along with the on-going enjoyment of the Keeper and Standard leagues. Much of the controversy sparked in previous years due to trades were corrected by a veto system (used once during the 2018 season). With many tweaks to the system, the RFFL is gearing up for a very exciting and entertaining 2019 season.
